Viral MarketingDefinition: Viral Marketing is a situation where the actual use of a product necessarily creates a demonstration or implied endorsement. It was coined by Steve Jurvetson in 1997. You can access his original articles here. The term is often used incorrectly to designate rapidly spreading or runaway word of mouth. Using it that way blurrs a very important distinction: there are some products that spread explosively because their use itself strongly encourages people to use the product. That's what the term "viral marketing" should be reserved for. I'm currently adding new examples of Viral Marketing to this page. In the meantime, you can check my blog -- wordofmouth.typepad.com -- for current examples. |
